Get Involved With AMA

Looking to make a difference in the Southern California market place? Want to expand your career, and influence other marketing professionals? AMA is for you!   Our chapter activities enable you to learn about the latest marketing techniques, meet and mingle with leaders in your profession, and simply have fun exchanging ideas with people who share your passion for marketing.  

We’re always ready to welcome you to one or more of the committees that make our chapter activities happen.  (Depending on the post, the committee membership commitment is approximately 5 to 15 hours per month. Listed below is a brief overview of each committee duties for the year. Call today, or e-mail us with a brief biography, and get involved with one of these groups:

Finance/Treasurer

I am interested in this group

This is a dual committee of Finance and Treasurer who understands financial policies of the Chapter and general policy's regarding non-profit organizations. Provide monthly recap reports of income/expense to the Board. Prepare final year-end reports of the year’s activities, including the final expense/income statement and recommendations for the following year. Expectations: member should have some business financial background, along with QuickBooks familiarity.

Membership

I am interested in this group

Recruit and welcome new members to the So. Cal. AMA Chapter. Ensure new and renewing members are aware of all the benefits So. Cal. AMA offers by giving each one a call the month they join or renew. Speak with incoming members about volunteering and other opportunities the Chapter has to offer. Work closely with Creative Talent Committee (see below) to ensure members are receiving value for their membership. Expectation: develop ongoing membership development programs, implement at least two (2) such programs annually, meet annual membership goals of the Chapter, and get members involved.

Creative Talent

I am interested in this group

Recruit Creative Talent (volunteers) to help the Chapter accomplish its goals and facilitate member interest in volunteerism. Communicate with new and existing members to ensure they get involved with the Chapter on many levels. Meet with members, and make recommendation to specific Board posts, Director posts, and Committees.

Expectations: must be proactive, personable and strategic in aligning members with opportunities.

Programming

I am interested in this group

Develop 12 programs annually (luncheons or dinners). Create each program topic and theme, recruit speakers, and work with Communications to ensure program advertising is done in a timely manner. Committee chairs are expected to develop regular programs, special events, and oversee hospitality and reservation procedures. Expectation: confident with recruiting speakers, coordinating programs, achieving pricing goals, work with Executive Director to secure meeting location, and ensure all A/V needs are met.

Communications

I am interested in this group

Develop communications plan to support all program activities of the Chapter while ensuring branding standards are achieved at all times. Create communication vehicles for members and non-members to promote all Chapter activities such as e-mails, faxes, advertisements, etc. Expectations: excellent with transforming vision into message, copy editing, knowledge of e-marketing, advertising, and fax campaign methods. Must be able to leverage some graphic design resources to develop communication vehicles and Chapter Web site.

Chapter News

I am interested in this group

Develop six (6) newsletters annually, and one (1) annual membership directory. Oversee design, content, printing, and delivery via Executive Director. Work with Advertising & Sponsorship to ensure vehicles are paying for themselves. Expectations: copy editing, familiarity with desktop publishing programs and printing process (i.e.: QuarkXpress, PageMaker, etc.).

Public Relations

I am interested in this group

Lead Public Relations efforts to meet Chapter objectives in media relations. Develop and implement PR plan, identify media opportunities with current Chapter activities. Develop Media Alerts and Announcements to promote up-coming programs; field incoming media inquiries and set-up interviews between VPs and media.

Expectations: competent pitching media, must understand AP (Associated Press) writing style, and know how to conceptualize and write Media Alerts & Press Releases.

Sponsorship

I am interested in this group

Develop sponsorship plans for Chapter as a whole and/or for specific events. Develop and maintain corporate sponsorship contact list. Keep accurate records of all donations, underwriting, and in-kind support. Develop a plan to acknowledge sponsors and be generous with "Thank Yous." Monitor sponsor support to avoid conflicts of interest with Chapter operating policies and assure all Chapter obligations to sponsors are met.

Expectations: comfortable with securing funds from companies on an annual basis, and proposing sponsorship activities to reach our members.

Advertising

I am interested in this group

Work closely with Sponsorships, Communications, Chapter News, and Programming. Develops advertising packages to help vendors reach Chapter members through the many Chapter advertising touch-points. Ensure advertising opportunities in newsletter, directory, and emails are fully utilized. Bring tabletop vendor to programs, and also barter in-kind partnerships with vendors. Expectations: comfortable with securing funds from companies, setting advertising rates, and proposing advertising activities to reach our members.

Academic Relations

I am interested in this group

By working with students, bridge collegiate AMA membership with Chapter activities. Cultivate involvement between marketing students and marketing professionals, and help nurture talent into the marketing profession. Work with local universities to recruit graduating seniors into the professional Chapter. Partner with clubs to create AMA student mixers, mentoring programs, and provide on-campus guest speakers. Manage the BUSINESS PLAN CHALLENGE competition; open to universities and colleges in the Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Professional Development

I am interested in this group

Provide and develop special programs with in-depth training to help members become well rounded in their marketing careers. Expectations: develop two (2) training series programs, and one (1) all-day program.

Executive Program

I am interested in this group

Create quarterly round table programs for C-level executive members (VP, SVP, and CEO's only) to cover topics that concern senior manager in So. California.

Expectations: develop themes, recruit speakers and key executives, and book premiere, secure venues for meetings.

Special Interest Group

I am interested in this group

SIG vice presidents are assigned to oversee activities, programs, seminars or conferences in specific topic areas. They may also be responsible for membership development in a specific industry. Expectations: conduct at least six (6) SIG meetings throughout the year to proceed or follow regular scheduled meetings.
